Columbus, Ohio-based artist N. Penney Denning composes collages from recycled images that have had a previous life in old and new photographs, magazines and printed materials that arrive at her doorstep. She fits cut images together in irrational and quirky ways, removing them from their original context to give them a new and unique frame of reference.
The artist has a Bachelor of Arts in Fine Arts from Cornell University, Ithaca, NY, and a Master of Fine Arts in Painting from The Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio.
Denning’s solo exhibition, Collage: The Art of Recycling, will be on view by appointment at Dublin Arts Council, 7125 Riverside Dr., Dublin, Ohio from April 26 through June 2. A “meet the artist” event, by appointment, is also scheduled for Saturday, May 14 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the gallery.
Appointments can be scheduled at https://visitdublinartscouncil.as.me/schedule.php

Artist’s statement
Collage: The Art of Recycling
Traditionally the medium of collage has referred to artwork made by gluing two-dimensional elements to a two-dimensional ground. Collage came out of the studio and into the exhibition halls early in the 20th century when Cubism fractured the traditional images of painting and sculpture. Often called the poor artist’s medium, it enabled the artist to be spontaneous and flexible, to move elements around quickly before committing to a final composition. This is one of the things I like about making collages.
I compose my collages from recycled images that have had a previous life in old and new photographs, magazines and from any and all printed materials that arrive at my doorstep. I fit the cut images together in irrational and quirky ways, removing them from their original context and giving them a new and unique one.
