Inspired by Victorian postmortem photographs and the “Flat Daddies and Flat Mommies” project serving families of members of the military, Jenny Fine explores the role of the photograph as a stand-in for a loved one.

In 40 photos on view in “Flat Granny and Me: A Suspension of Disbelief” at the Dublin Arts Council gallery, Fine — who received her Master of Fine Arts from Ohio State University in 2010 and was a 2012 Greater Columbus Arts Council artist in residence in Dresden, Germany — features recent photos of her grandmother.

The catch: Granny died years ago.
