"Field of Corn (with Osage Orange Trees)",
was created by Columbus artist Malcolm Cochran in 1994. 109 human-sized
ears of concrete corn stand upright in realistic row patterns in
front of a backdrop of Osage Orange trees in Sam and Eulalia Frantz
Park.
There are three different "ears" from
which the whole field was cast. The height of the corn is intended
to strike a balance between being large enough to be impressive
from a distance, yet modest enough to have an intimate, human scale
when viewed up close.
The field stands as a celebration of Dublin's
history as a farming community and serves as a memorial to rural
landscape being consumed by urban development. The Osage Orange
trees further the farming metaphor. Dating back to the 19th century,
the row provided natural fencing for farmers and delineated the
region.
The site of "Field of Corn" was once
owned by Sam Frantz, a pioneer in corn hybridization.
